Breville Duo Temp Pro: The Good & The Bad

The Good

This coffee maker is a good buy if you love coffee with rich, flavorful, balanced espresso. Its advanced pre-infusion technology, perfect brewing temperature, and the complete control and flexibility of this machine to brew coffee are worth every penny. Aside from the fact that it can prepare various coffee drinks in different sizes, its microfoam technology will make you love latte drinks more.

The Bad

The Breville Duo Temp Pro also has many downsides. Apart from the good features mentioned above, this machine also comes with a hefty price tag. Unlike other Breville espresso machines with built-in features, this model doesn’t have an integrated burr grinder. And just like any top-of-the-line espresso machine, this model requires high maintenance, from cleaning to replacing broken parts.

The Bottom Line

There’s no perfect Breville espresso machine, but this model has a tremendous price-to-value ratio which offsets its high cost. It’s a semi-automatic coffee machine worth using if you want complete control and flexibility in the brewing process. Its features might be insufficient for an experienced user, but it’s a great startup espresso machine for those starting their coffee journey because it has a steep learning curve.

The 1600 watts is a bonus compared to competitors along with the maintenance indicators. If you’re wanting an everyday espresso machine that can also make lattes or milk-based drinks, this is an excellent choice from a reputable and well-known brand.

If you’re looking for a “forever” espresso machine, the search is over with Breville Duo Temp Pro.

Breville Duo-Temp Pro: Features and Benefits

Here are the features that you’ll get with the Breville Duo-Temp Pro:

Precise Espresso Extraction

The espresso machine uses a 15-bar pressure pump to ensure a precise espresso extraction. The device is versatile because it uses a 9-bar pressure pump for that low-pressure pre-infusion so that you can prepare a great-tasting espresso.

The low-pressure pre-infusion function of the Duo Temp works by gradually increasing the water pressure allowing the coffee grinds to expand for an even extraction gently. And as the grinds undergo extraction, the pressure rises to its full potential.

Three-second Heating System

The Breville Duo Temp Pro can heat water in three seconds and maintain its temperature with consistency. It is all possible with the Thermocoil heating system, which is responsible for regulating the temperature of the water that goes through the group head. With the increased stable temperature, you can always expect espresso shots with the best quality.

Auto Purge

The Duo Temp Pro has automated purge capability making it big for a machine of such scope. It can be used for the regulation of the heat of the brew head inside the PID. The automatic purge function of the Breville espresso machines prevents extracting burnt coffee as the machine switches from steaming to brewing coffee.

Right after the machine brews, it purges water into the drip tray. It’s a small detail of the brewing process that’s worth observing because it ensures that the Thermocoil is at its optimal temperature, ready to prepare your favorite third-wave specialty coffee.

Design

Simple Interface

Controls are the single dial that switches on and off the brewing or steam/hot water and the switch for steam or hot water. While the features may appear limited, the lesser control points allow beginners to concentrate on improving their skills.

The control panel of this espresso machine is pretty straightforward as you can quickly locate it just right on top of the group head. To get better acquainted with the control panel, it consists of the following:

  • One knob has two selections for preparing espresso and for steaming or heating water. If you’d like to make an espresso, you should turn the knob to the left, while getting hot water will require you to turn the knob to the right.
  • This espresso machine has two backlit buttons, which are the select button and the power button. You can turn off/on the device by pressing the power button. To activate the steam/hot water function, you’ll need to press the select button.
  • There’s a dedicated drip tray to keep your coffee mugs warm as you wait for the machine to finish brewing your coffee.

Stainless Steel Casing

The brushed stainless steel finish of the espresso machine has the potential to elevate your kitchen interiors.

Removable Water Tanks

Refilling the water reservoir is easy as it is detachable from the machine. The 61-ounce water tank of the Duo Temp Pro also has an integrated water filtration system. You can refill the tank in two ways: by filling it from the top or pulling it up from the machine.

Machine Size

Compared to other K-cup coffee makers, it’s more compact. It’s a bit smaller than the Breville Infuser. So if you’re looking for an espresso machine that doesn’t require much kitchen space but is packed with essential features to brew espresso, this machine must be it.

Baskets

The brewing machine also has both pressurized baskets and non-pressurized baskets. Both portafilters measure 54mm. Likewise, the device includes two single-wall and double-wall filter baskets.

Steam Wand

The Duo Temp Pro’s steam wand can swivel 360 degrees to texture milk and produce latte art. Such flexibility allows you to make a mesmerizing, creamy micro-foam that adds flavor to the coffee and creates latte art for an enjoyable coffee experience.

Aside from its ability in milk texturing, the steam wand also serves as a hot water dispenser for other hot beverages.

Concealed Storage

You can store extra baskets and other espresso machine accessories in Duo Temp Pro’s concealed storage.

Usability

Shot Control

Don’t forget that the Duo Temp is a semi-automatic espresso machine. Meaning, some functions of the espresso maker require a bit of tinkering. Yet, preparing a balanced tasting cup with Breville Duo Temp Pro is an experience for practicing baristas. That’s because the machine gives freedom to its users to select their preferred espresso volume.

This commercial machine doesn’t have preset shots, which you can find in other Breville espresso machines. To use the feature, you have to turn the control dial to the left (espresso option) to commence the brewing process.

When you return the dial to its original position, the brewing process ceases. Ultimately, you have complete control over how much coffee you want to prepare.

Perfect Brewing Temperature

Among the other semi-automatic espresso machines with the same price tag, the Duo Temp Pro has the perfect brewing temperature that’s about 190 degrees Fahrenheit. This semi-automatic espresso machine can achieve this precise temperature as it employs digital temperature control (PID).

The digital temperature control (PID) is responsible for detecting and minimizing any fluctuations in temperature that may occur during the extraction process. It makes sure that the vital temperature to make a good espresso is always at its optimum range.

Noise

Hearing a loud noise coming from an espresso machine that uses 15 bar pump pressure is normal. Especially if it creates steam. Just like any other espresso machine, the Duo Temp Pro also makes noise.

Durability

Think of stainless steel as the king of all materials. It’s durable, easy to clean, and has a long-lasting quality that is second to none! Breville manufactures their appliances with this material which means you can always be sure they’re high quality like those from DeLonghi, also known for using stainless steel!

The maintenance indicators in the control panel will start flashing when it’s time to clean your espresso machine. Note that the process covered below is how you can backflush the coffee maker, which is different from descaling.

For the regular cleaning cycle or backflushing that you can do every 2-3 months, here’s what you can do:

  1. Pull the tab up before you Insert the silicone cleaning disc into the portafilter.
  2. Position the cleaning tablet on the center of the disc.
  3. Put back and Insert the portafilter into the brew head and lock it into place.
  4. Make sure that the espresso machine’s POWER button is ON.
  5. Turn the Control Dial to the left (ESPRESSO) position for 20 seconds.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Do you have further questions about the Breville Duo Temp Pro? Here are the answers to some of the common queries about this coffee maker:

Should I get the Duo Temp Pro or the Barista Express?

The choice here depends on what’s most important to you – as both machines are of very high quality. If price is more important than convenience features, then go with the Breville Barista Express. Otherwise, the Duo Temp Pro might be better for you.

How do I use the Breville Duo Temp Pro BES810BSS?

To start up the coffee machine, you’ll need to fill the tank first with water before you press the POWER button. Then you’ll hear a pumping sound indicating that the device is operating to reach the optimal temperature before it goes to its ‘standby’ mode.

How do you steam milk Breville Duo Temp Pro?

The Duo Temp Pro has the traditional steam wand installed. To use the steam wand, you have to follow the steps below:
1) Purge the steam wand before you use it to texture milk.
2) Turn the dial to the right (steam). The LED marker will illuminate, indicating that you activated the steam function. After the steam appears, turn the knob back to the center (standby position) to pause the steam. It will cease for 8 seconds.
3) Afterward, insert the steam road to the milk and turn the control dial to the ‘steam position’ to begin texturing the milk.
4) To stop the wand from milk texturing, just turn the control dial from ‘steam’ selection back to its standby position.

How do I descale my Breville Duo Temp Pro?

To descale the Duo Temp Pro, you’ll need to soak the filter first in a cup of water for 5 minutes. Then rinse it for a minute in the cold, running water. Afterward, rinse the entire parts of the filter before you insert mesh at the bottom of the water reservoir. It’s then followed by the water filter on top of the mesh. Lastly, place the oblong filter handle to lock it in place.

How do you make espresso with Breville Duo Temp Pro?

Preparing espresso with Breville Duo Temp Pro is easy. Position your pre-warmed cup below the group head as you turn the dial to the left (espresso) until you reach the optimal volumetric control. Remember that espresso shots will start to flow after 8-10 seconds of infusion time, and their consistency is comparable to that of honey when poured.

The espresso is under extraction if it starts to flow in 6 seconds. It could be the filter baskets are underdosed, or your coffee grinds are too coarse. However, if the espresso shots didn’t flow after 15 seconds, it’s eventually an over-extracted shot. It happens either when the filter basket has overdosed, or the coffee grind you used is too fine.

What size is Breville Portafilter?

The portafilter of Duo Temp Pro measures 54mm.

Why does Breville use a 54mm Portafilter?

Breville uses a 54mm portafilter because it’s the standard size of most portafilters used in Breville espresso machines. It can be bottomless or not. However, many find that bottomless portafilters are way better to use because it makes the espresso taste better, the cream is silkier and more decadent, and it’s easier to clean.
