What is a Mexican Coffee Cocktail?
The Mexican coffee cocktail is a simple alcoholic beverage that combines gold tequila, Kahlua, hot coffee, and a dollop of whipping cream into a velvety and warm drink.
I was introduced to this drink by a barista friend a few years back, and I was surprised how easy it was to whip up. So when guests seek a mood-boosting caffeinated concoction, I find myself reaching for the ingredients to make Mexican coffee.
Now it’s your turn to give it a try.
Ingredients for Making a Mexican Coffee Cocktail
Here are the things that you will need for this Mexican coffee cocktail:
- Drip coffee machine, AeroPress, Moka pot, etc.:
- Mug or glass with a handle: Where your coffee cocktail will be served.
- Spoon or stirrer: Use this to mix the drink well.
- 15 ml gold tequila: This adds a smooth flavor to your cocktail.
- 22 ml Kahlua: Gives your drink richness and depth.
- 1 tsp brown sugar: (Optional) The sweetness complements the other ingredients.
- 150 ml (5 oz) fresh hot coffee: This serves as the base of your cocktail, giving it warmth and that rich coffee taste. Choose whichever brewing method you like, I use drip coffee for mine.

What kind of cup should you serve Mexican Coffee Cocktails in?
The Mexican coffee cocktail is best served in a mug or glass with a handle since it’s a warm drink. I prefer transparent glass so I can see the layers which adds to the experience.
Tips for Making Mexican Coffee Cocktail
Making a Mexican coffee cocktail is easy enough, but here are some extra tips to enhance your experience with this drink:
- Make your own Kahlua: You can also make your Kahlua from scratch. You can check out my recipe for making a Kahlua coffee liqueur.
- Skip the sugar: Since the Kahlua is already sweet, you can skip the sugar in this recipe to tone down that sweetness.
- Top it with some cocoa or spice: If you want to add some complexity to your cup, you can dust some cocoa powder, cinnamon, or cayenne pepper over the whipped cream.
